RADA NotesThis year the Tennis Club was very active and several members competed in tournaments throughout the summer months.
For the first time in many years a team was entered in the Ellesmere A Grade Competition and although it was not very successful, many very close and interesting matches were contested. Our special thanks must go to the young ladies who so willingly helped the team out on many occasions during the season, and to the men for their services, especially Bob Moffat. Six College players entered in the Ellesmere Championship this season. The first Saturday was "doubles day" and the Mackay sisters showed good form to reach the semi-finals; Richardson and Knight were eliminated in the first round of the men's doubles while Hay and Marriott managed to survive one round. In the mixed doubles, Shona Mackay and Hay went down in the first round, but Phillipa Mackay and Marriott fought their way through to the third round. A fortnight later, Shona Mackay proved her superiority by winning her way to the final of the singles, but was unsuccessful in the final played the following week. Phillipa Mackay reached the third round, but Hay and Marriott were disposed of early in the proceedings.
On March 1, six players entered the Country Championships, played at Wilding Park, but were not very successful in their events.
When everybody returned for the beginning of the new session, it appeared that there would be considerable competition for the proposed team to go to Massey, as indeed there was. The team finally picked was Cornelius, Sutherland, Whitney and Donald, who all performed remarkably well to defeat Massey by 8 matches to 4, our first Inter-College win for some years. Congratulations to the boys on their good performance from all accounts everyone enjoyed themselves immensely while up North.
Another big step forward this year was the entry of a Lincoln team in Easter Tournament held at Christchurch. Cornelius had unfortunately put his racquet away, so his place in the team was filled by Marriott. Otago University was our first challenger and Donald played very sound tennis to emerge as our only successful singles contestant. Marriott and Donald went on to win a three set battle in the doubles. In the losers' final, we played Victoria University of Wellington, easily winning the wooden spoon by nil matches to six. Our four players were eliminated from the individual singles event, ending the season on a happy but not a very successful note.
