George Edward Ormond, Dip.Agr. (1907-09).
Mr G. E. Ormond died at Pongaroa, Hawkes Bay on Ausust 11, 1960, at the age of 72. He was the eldest of the nine sons of George Canning Ormond, who married a Maori princess and who pioneered the Mahia peninsula, Wairoa. A brother of George Canning Ormond was Frank Ormond who was at Lincoln 1890-91 and who until his death at Napier some years ago, was a strong supporter of the Old Students' Association.
Educated at Wanganui Collegiate School, as were all his brothers George Edward Ormond came to Lincoln in 1907. During his three years he was a stalwart lock forward of the 1st XV, and also played for Canterbury during his final year at Lincoln. He also represented Hawkes Bay for several years after returning to his home. At Lincoln he was an active member of the athletics committee and in all respects enjoyed to the full his period at the College.
He then farmed at Pongaroa and became a highly esteemed member of the Wairoa community, being a member of the Wairoa County Council for 24 years and a long-term patron of the Wairoa Rugby Sub-Union. He exerted good influence among the Maori people and was a prominent member of the tribal communities of the East Coast.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs Aira Ormond and his family. Among his surviving brothers are Mr T. Omana, member of Parliament for Eastern Maori, and Mr A. R. Ormond who took the College Diploma (1926-28) and who is farming at Culverden, North Canterbury.
